Steere House is an independent non-profit organization, serving adults who require skilled, restorative, and long-term care services within a secure and caring environment. Steere House also provides educational and research experiences that enhance the care of those we serve.
Steere House is nestled on the Rhode Island Hospital campus in Providence and primarily serves the greater Providence community. The three-story facility features 120 beds for our long-term skilled nursing and memory care residents, as well as our short-term rehabilitation patients. The units include private and semi-private rooms, dining rooms, as well as airy, common sitting areas. A spacious outdoor courtyard is located in our secured backyard setting, surrounded by gardens and walking paths. Our facility is easily accessible from Route 95 and downtown Providence, making it convenient for families and attending physicians to visit.
Steere House offers a warm and comfortable environment where long-term residents receive personalized care and attention while remaining as independent as possible. Each resident is assigned a primary Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) who, through daily contact, develops an understanding of residents’ backgrounds, medical histories, personalities, and other factors that influence care. Our approach to long-term care provides a cheerful, positive atmosphere with opportunities for socialization, spiritual support, and activities structured to residents’ interests and needs.
Ideal for those with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory impairments, the Memory Care Unit at Steere House offers a safe and therapeutic environment that facilitates the independence, comfort, and security of every resident. Our Dementia Care Team brings a special blend of expertise and compassion to assist residents and their families dealing with the latter stages of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia disorders. Care plans are developed for each resident to enhance functioning, accommodate personal preferences, and reduce symptoms. The Unit is staffed with 24-hour nursing support, seven days a week where a variety of services and activities are available to promote a full and meaningful life.

Our Rehabilitation Unit is staffed by a team of medical professionals who provide short-term specialized rehabilitative care to help patients attain their highest level of functioning for a smooth transition home or to the most appropriate community setting.  We provide physical, speech, and occupational therapy and offer a team approach to meet individual needs.  Our staff is well-trained to treat the special problems of the geriatric resident, such as orthopedic rehabilitation, stroke, and other medical conditions.  Our commitment is to provide quality care and services so that our residents and patients can maintain the maximum quality of life.

The Steere House Leadership Team is comprised of experienced healthcare industry professionals. This Team and its staff, including in-house and contract personnel, provide a full range of services to meet the needs of our residents and patients.

Steere House is supported by Brown Medical Group Attending Physicians.  A teaching facility, Steere House also offers on-site real-world experience to Brown University Warren Alpert School of Medicine Geriatric Fellows and Medical students, University of Rhode Island Pharmacy interns, hands-on nursing opportunities for Community College of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, and many others.

Established in 1874, the “Home for Aged Men” was founded by Henry J. Steere and Lucy Bucklin. Together, they contributed to the efforts of several clergy and Providence-area individuals to support the formation of a society to provide a home for aged men similar to the one founded in 1865 for aged women. The first resident, Mr. John Draper, arrived on October 12, 1874. Over the years, changes occurred gradually, as the Home’s location changed to meet the growing needs of the community. In January 1991, the Home was moved to the current three-story facility is a 120-bed, freestanding skilled nursing facility on the Rhode Island Hospital campus and renamed Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
