Remembrance gifts:
Remembrance gifts also offer bereaved families the opportunity to invite others to make a contribution, The following wording is suggested for inclusion in obituary notices: “In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Steere House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, 100 Borden Street, Providence, RI 02903.”
Planned Giving
Members of The DiPersio Society have named Steere House in their estate plan through a planned gift.
Colonel Edward R. DiPersio, a long time Steere House Board Member and Officer of Steere House, gave much of himself to the facility. In his honor, The DiPersio Society was established. Members of The DiPersio Society have named Steere House in their estate plan.
These gifts include bequests, charitable trusts, annuities, or life insurance. By investing in Steere House with a planned gift, you can receive benefits today and know that you are providing a critical source of support that will greatly impact the future success of our mission for years to come.
Endowment Gifts
A contribution to the endowment is a permanent investment in the future of Steere House.
With the security of a strong financial base, we will be in the best possible position to respond to the needs of Canton and the surrounding communities’ growing elderly population.
Gifts may be made to the endowment in many ways:
Bequests
Friends may name Steere House as a beneficiary through a provision in their wills. All or some portion of an estate may be given, according to the wishes of the donor. The bequest may also be worded so that Steere House receives a gift after other provisions of the will have been satisfied. Estate planning experts suggest that wills should be reviewed every three years, or whenever major events occur in your life such as births, deaths, significant changes in wealth, etc. If you do not have a will, your estate will be distributed in accordance with the laws of the state in which you reside. With a will, those decisions are yours.
Life Insurance
You may change or name the beneficiary on an existing policy to Steere House.
Retirement Plans
Charitable gift opportunities exist through IRA, 401K and other retirement vehicles. The tax advantages can be comparable to those available from a bequest.
Appreciated Securities
By donating stock directly to The Hellenic, you benefit from a tax deduction for the current value and avoid capital gains taxes.
Employee Development Team
The Steere House Employee Development Team (EDT) is a group of employees who organized fundraising activities to support those programs or initiatives that help to improve the quality of residents’ daily lives.
The Team is active in developing in-house fundraising efforts, such as bake sales, gift basket raffles and other efforts to raise money to support specific resident needs. The Team is also responsible for such community efforts as the Steere House Walk. Each year, the group also organizes the Gifts from The Heart Employee Annual Fund, when employees can designate paycheck contributions for specified Steere House projects.
Through their efforts, they have raised more than $100,000 in the last nine years, making an undeniable impact. With these funds, they have purchased an innovative Music & Memory program, twenty-two electric beds valued at $30,000, a pergola and electric doors for residents’ enjoyment of our outdoor courtyards: spiritual, arts and entertainment programs and so much more.
Four officers serve as the Team’s leadership and all employees are invited to participate by contributing manpower and donations – all to make EDT efforts successful.
Special Funds
Make a donation to our Activities or one of our restricted endowment funds to ensure their continued success.
Steere House offers many ways to support the programs and services which directly benefit our employees and those we serve. Be sure to use the special instruction box upon checkout to specify which fund you would like your gift to support. Steere House is a non-profit, 501(c) (3) charitable organization.
Activities Fund
Gifts to the Activities Fund provide opportunities for residents and patients to take part in activities and enjoy entertainment that would not be possible without special funding.
Education Fund
The Education Fund was established to encourage staff to further their education. It helps to cover tuition costs not covered in the Steere House tuition reimbursement policy.
Alton’s Place Memorial Garden Fund
Initially established in memory of Edward Alton Leeming by his family, the Alton’s Place Garden Fund is now an endowed fund and will ensure that this lovely, secure and safe garden will always be available for residents.
George O. and Kathryn G. Steere Chaplaincy Fund
During Kay Steere’s tenure on the Board of Directors, she worked diligently to bring about a permanent chaplaincy program. Upon her retirement, George and Kay established the Chaplaincy Fund.
Restricted Endowment Funds
Restricted endowments have been established for a specific program or area by donors who wish to establish a fund in perpetuity. Interest from these funds is used for the purposes specified, and the principal remains untouched. We welcome additional contributions to these existing funds, as well as the establishment of new funds that reflect the special interests of donors and the needs of Steere House.
Pearl Kameny Memorial Lectureship
Pearl Kameny was a long-term resident at Steere House. When she celebrated her 100th birthday, her daughter, Joan Gelch, and Dr. Melvyn Gelch established the Pearl Kameny Lectureship in Geriatric Medicine. The aging population requires well-trained clinicians and the Kameny Lectureship provides an educational program that contributes to that goal. The Lectureship is held every year for medical staff and clinicians at Lifespan hospitals, Steere House staff, students, residents and fellows of Brown University School of Medicine; and Carelink members.
